Events: Howie Award

The Howie Award

For Outstanding Service
To Riverside County Agriculture

The Robert M. Howie Award is an annual award given by the Riverside County Farm Bureau to recognize outstanding service to Riverside County agriculture. First presented in 1983, the Howie Award was established by Farm Bureau to honor Robert M. Howie, who retired in 1982 after serving 28 years as the county agricultural commissioner. Farm Bureau makes the award to remind our industry each year of the dedication that Bob Howie demonstrated and to recognize and encourage that kind of dedication in other people.

The Award: The Howie Award is a plaque featuring a six-inch, bronze, sculpted medallion with Bob Howie’s profile and the words "Robert M. Howie Award - Outstanding Service to Riverside Agriculture," along with a plate bearing the name of the recipient and year, plus the Farm Bureau logo and seal. The name of each recipient is also added to large perpetual plaques in the county Agriculture Department office and at Farm Bureau.

Who Is Eligible: A nominee may be any individual who has done outstanding service for agriculture in Riverside County. The nomination should be for service beyond the ordinary duties and normal responsibilities of the nominee. A nominee does not have to be a resident of Riverside County and may be an elected or other public official, teacher, reporter, farmer, 4-H leader or anyone else who meets the general qualifications for nomination. The award is made only to living individuals. Farm Bureau staff and members of the Howie Award Committee are not eligible.

Howie Award Committee: Each year the president of Riverside County Farm Bureau appoints a Howie Award Committee to collect nominations and select a recipient.

Presentation of the Award: The Howie Award is presented at the annual meeting of members of Riverside County Farm Bureau.

How To Nominate Someone: Nominations may be made by any Farm Bureau member. Nominations may be submitted to Riverside County Farm Bureau, 21160 Box Springs Road, #102, Moreno Valley, CA 92557, by fax to 951/782-0621 or by e-mail to award@riversidecfb.com. The minimum nomination requirement is that the name of the nominee be submitted in writing. Nominations may also provide additional information about the nominee and why he or she should be considered for a Howie Award. Nominations may be made at any time. The Howie Award Committee will announce a deadline for consideration for each year’s award. Nominations received after that date will automatically be considered for the following year.
